Crush spices into a flavorful dry rub for meats or grind garlic, hot chilis, and lemongrass into a spicy Thai curry with this miniature mortar and pestle. The four-piece set includes a tiny 4-inch-diameter bowl that is just big enough to mash a single or double portion of ingredients, a 6-3/4-inch-long pestle, and two sieves--one with fine mesh and the other with ultra-fine. All pieces are made of durable 18/10 stainless-steel, which won't stain when crushing colorful spices such as cumin seed and won't absorb even the strongest food flavors or odors. The exterior of the mortar is brilliantly polished while the interior is brushed so scratches from grinding are not so obvious. The pestle has a textured surface on its working end to provide a little extra crushing power and a knob at the base of the handle to keep hands from sliding off. The screens are useful for cooks who are particular about the particle size of their ground spices or herbs and provide two different size options. Screens lock onto the top of the mortar to prevent them from sliding during vigorous pulverizing. For convenience, all components of this set clean up easily in the dishwasher. --Cristina Vaamonde

Sometimes the simplest way to grind food is also the best. Using a mortar and pestle pulverizes food, releasing all its tasty oils and aromas in the process. (The friction involved in the whirling blades of a food processor, on the other hand, burns through these flavor-making compounds.) A mortar and pestle is especially suited for crushing seeds, herbs, and spices--including garlic. Pesto made in this manner is truly heavenly and justifies the effort expended in its creation. Norpros uniquely-carved, bowl-shaped pestle is designed to cover a wide surface area, and uses efficient, rotary-style motion. Its made of porcelain, ideal for a mortar and pestle as it wont absorb food odors or stain. Measuring four by three inches, the Norpro mortar and pestle clean easily by hand, or in a dishwasher. --Mary Park

Combining form, function, and style, Typhoon has created a unique line of cookware tools, kitchen gadgets, and dinnerware items that coordinate with a variety of home decors and occasions. Designed with a contemporary flair, many of the housewares products blend a sophisticated sensibility with a retro edginess. What better way to smash garlic and spices than with a traditional pestle and mortar set. Made from heavy matte finish cast iron, that won't move when being used, the set includes a small 3-ounce mortar that fits into the larger 7-ounce mortar for easy storage. The large bowl sits on a non-skid rubber foot and has a small spout for pouring. Both mortars can be used together when recipes require more than one type of spice or herb to be ground. The accompanying pestle is also crafted from cast iron and contains a stainless steel top attached to the handle. Typhoon recommends washing by hand and not soaking in water. --Lea Werbel

With high sides for extra capacity and an abrasive matte finish to facilitate grinding, this 4-inch mortar and pestle set has a myriad of kitchen uses. It can be used to crack garlic cloves, grind spices and aromatic roots, pound chiles, crush nuts, and create silken, creamy sauces like pesto, mayonnaise, and skordalia with a precision a food processor or blender can't match. Made of chip-resistant white ceramic, the mortar and pestle are nonporous so they won't absorb moisture, odors, or flavors and can be safely cleaned in a dishwasher without acquiring a soapy taste. The pestle has an ample grip for ease of use. --Fred Brack

Keep this trio of colorful small mortars with pestles close at hand. You'll realize how often they can replace the hard-to-clean miniblender, and, in fact, how they give you greater control over the consistency of ground ingredients. Three spouted mortars in a row can hold individual spices for the final mixture: add just the right amounts of cumin, coriander, and turmeric to your curry powder. Or coarsely grind pepper in one mortar, pulverize garlic with basil in the second, and crush cardamom for a cake in the third. --Patricia Draher

This attractive and durable mortar and pestle is ideal for grinding almost any herb or spice, from rosemary to anise to chiles (perfect for a piquant red mole). The mortar features a coarse surface for grinding, and is 5-1-/2 inches in diameter with 4/14-inch tall sides, while the pestle is 7 inches long. Both are constructed of powder-coated cast iron, which provides stability and strength, and the mortar has a convenient spout on one side and a nonskid base. The pestles ergonomically designed Santoprene handle is strong enough to deal with the toughest herbs, but soft enough that it wont wear out your hands. This combo should last a lifetime--but you do have to treat them with proper care. Before the first usage (and after each subsequent usage) wash the set with a mild dishwashing liquid, rinse with warm water, and dry with a soft cloth or paper towel. Then spread a thin coat of oil over the cast-iron surfaces of both the mortar and the pestle (vegetable oil is recommended, but be sure not to use a salted fat, such as margarine, and dont season in the oven). Never allow the mortar and pestle to drip dry or wash in dishwasher, and be sure to season all of the exposed surfaces right after theyve been washed and dried. This will not only prevent foods from sticking but will also prevent rust. --A.J. Rathbun

Continuously produced in England since 1816, the Blue Italian pattern from Spode will easily find a home on a casual or more formal table. Utilizing an underglaze printing process created by Josiah Spode and still employed today, varying shades of blue and white make up the lovely design, adding a 3-dimensional depth to each piece. This Blue Italian mortar and pestle set is an essential addition to any gourmet kitchen and can be used to grind spices and herbs, make dips and spreads, or crush nuts and seeds. With a matte surface to aid in grinding, the 7-inch pestle has a classically rounded base and decorated handle. The weighted mortar measures 5 by 5-1/4 inches, stands 3-1/4 inches high, and contains a small lip in which to rest the pestle. Based upon a late 17th Century drawing, the central design decorating the outer bowl depicts classic Italian ruins in a pastoral setting, while an 18th Century Chinese-inspired floral motif trims the edges of each piece in the set. Crafted from Spode's high-quality earthenware, known as Imperialware, this set can safely be placed in the microwave or dishwasher. --Lea Werbel
