"Micom" means this sleek rice cooker is computer-controlled and ultra high-tech, from its spherical, nonstick pan to its "surround heating" system to its LCD clock and timer. (Program the cooker in the morning and have hot rice available immediately after work.) It not only cooks up to 3 cups of dry rice, but offers a choice of white/brown, mixed, sweet, and porridge settings. A quick-cooking option cuts time by 10 minutes. Rice is automatically kept at warm for hours, and a reheat feature brings it back to serving temperature. Instructions and a cooking chart explain everything. At 10-3/4 by 8-1/2 by 8 inches, it's remarkably compact and also lightweight. Transport it by its handle. Cord retracts for storage. --Fred Brack

Pasta inserts ease the effort of cooking pasta, corn on the cob, lobster, or any other boiled food. Simply cook your food of choice, then lift the insert by its double loop handles and hold it over the sink to drain. You'll graduate from pasta-cooking fool to seasoned pasta professional in no time. The insert, part of the Contemporary Nonstick line, fits comfortably in Calphalon 8-quart pots. It features a hard-anodized stainless-steel exterior and nonstick interior to combine durability and performance in a single package. It's also an attractive accompaniment, giving your cooking space a flair normally reserved for professional kitchens. The insert includes a lifetime warranty. --Rivers Janssen

It's less what it includes than what it lacks that makes this Norpro vegetable steamer a cut above your average steamer insert. Without a bothersome center post, there is plenty of unobstructed room to steam entire heads of broccoli or cauliflower or full-length cobs of corn--and finished vegetables are easier to remove with a spoon or a spatula as denser veggies keep steaming. No need to slice carrots or pole beans beforehand--just plop them whole into the basket, which expands from 7 to 10 inches, depending on the size of the pot you set it in. The three-pronged base provides stability equal to models with center posts, but instead of one central handle there are two ring-style side handles. This is another improvement, as you don't need to reach into the middle of the steaming-hot food to remove the basket, and using the side handles supports the basket's shape rather than allowing its "petals" to pop open flat upon lifting. The heavy-duty waffled segments hold tightly together during use and fold inward for compact storage. --Carol Gnojewski

Cooking with steam is healthful, easy, and fast, especially with a smartly constructed steamer like this lidded model from Anolon. Durable and generously sized, both steamer and lid are constructed from commercial grade 18/10 stainless steel. The steamer's perforated bottom lets in plenty of steam, while its solid stair-step sides make it compatible with 1-1/2-, 2-, 3-, and 4-quart saucepans. A snug-fitting stainless-steel lid completes the efficient operation. Anolon's HollowCore stainless-steel handles-on the basket and the lid-have a comfortable rounded shape and a nonslip texture. Attached with extra-large rivets, they stay cool during cooking for easy handling. The steamer's attractive and stain-resistant satiny finish stands up to frequent use and the dishwasher. --Emily Bedard

Designed for the delicate timing and high heat demands of steam cooking, this All-Clad stainless-steel steamer nestles deep into cooking vessels. The tiered structure fits both 6- and 8-inch diameter pots and creates an ideal steaming environment for small and large quantities of vegetables, greens, and fresh shellfish. Crafted from heavy-gauge 18/10 stainless steel, the steamer is strong without clumsiness and is easily controlled by its two riveted side loop handles. Measuring 8-1/2 inches in diameter, the lid features a deep draw to keep steam from escaping and has a gleaming mirror finish to match the body. Both pieces are pretty enough to bring to the table--a rather unusual trait in steamers--and safe in the dishwasher. Measuring 8-1/4 inches in diameter at the opening, handles excluded, the steamer carries All-Clad's lifetime warranty. --Emily Bedard

Calphalon's stainless cookware is designed for chefs who demand unparalleled quality and performance. Made from brushed 18/10 stainless steel, this cookware delivers the quality insisted on by gourmets who won't compromise. This 6-quart all-purpose insert is ideal for easily removing pastas, shellfish, or stock ingredients from any 6-1/2-quart saucepan or pot (specifically Calphalon's Professional Hard-Anodized, Commercial Hard-Anodized, Commercial Nonstick and Professional Nonstick lines). The nickel-chrome-plated, triple-riveted handles won't rust, although they also won't stay as cool as the Cool V handles available on Calphalon's other cookware lines. However, this insert is dishwasher-safe and is covered by a lifetime warranty. --Ariel Meadow Stallings
